The whale shark is a gentle giant that swims slowly and filters its food. It’s the biggest fish in the world, with the largest one ever recorded measuring 18.8 meters long. Whale sharks hold many size records, making them the largest living animal that’s not a whale.
The Four-Hour Trip
Our journey to Oslob started when our Plane landed at Mactan-Cebu International Airport in the bustling city of Cebu. Oslob is about 4 hours away from the airport, but the drive is simple and straightforward with no zigzag or mountainous roads. It’s easy to reach and offers a peaceful escape just waiting to be explored.
Arriving At Oslob
Here’s a Checklist of what we brought:
- Swimwear: It’s best if you are already wearing them when you arrive since there are no actual accommodation within the area. There are comfort rooms with fees.
- Waterproof Camera: While you can rent gear on-site, bringing your own ensures you capture every moment of this unique adventure with your own creative touch.
- Money: The locals aren’t very used to online payments or money wallets yet, so make sure to bring physical cash with you. Seal your cash in waterproof bags to keep it dry and handy. You might need it for extra services or those must-have souvenirs along the way, adding a touch of convenience to your adventure.
Whale Shark Watching in Oslob
Now, let’s dive into the highlight of our adventure – swimming with the majestic Whale Sharks. As we arrived at the snorkeling site, the excitement and awe in the air were obvious. These gentle giants, some reaching up to 30 feet long, have made Oslob their home, creating an unforgettable experience filled with wonder. Definitely better than just learning about them on an ocean amusement park.
Sadly, I’m not that good of a swimmer, so I was holding on for my dear life on the boat beams.
Tips for Swimming with Whale Sharks
Before boarding the boats, our guide kindly explained the rules. The most important one? Keep a respectful distance of 3-4 feet from these amazing creatures – no touching allowed. It was hard, since sometimes, the whale sharks would hover right next to us.
We were very excited to dive into the clear waters. It felt like stepping into another world. In an instant, we were face-to-face with these oceanic royalty – the Whale Sharks. The boat drivers and locals would throw huge chunks of food.. which explains why they keep on returning and staying in that area of the ocean.
Words can’t truly describe the feeling of being so close. I was so captivated by the moment that I ended up taking fewer photos than I planned. Good thing the tour guides are also great divers and they took photos of us while underwater.
End of the Experience
My little trip in Oslob was very “sulit”. While debates persist around the feeding practices of Whale Sharks, the undeniable truth is the positive impact on the local community and economy – a burst of positivity.
By the way… we also saw a sea turtle!
