What Makes It Miraculous?
Our adventure kicks off in the lush hills of Lindogon, Simala, Sibonga, Cebu—a treasured spot for both locals and globetrotters. What’s the secret sauce that makes this sacred haven so unique? Well, it’s the legendary Virgin Mary at Simala Shrine. Not just any statue, but one believed to wield miraculous powers. On her birthday, September 8th, there’s a jaw-dropping phenomenon: she’s said to shed tears of blood! Yep, you read that right. Curious? This profound pilgrimage site definitely needs a place on your travel bucket list. Trust me, you won’t regret it!
Before you enter this sacred place, there’s a simple tradition to follow—leave your shoes at the door. Don’t worry, this small act sets the tone for your spiritual journey. If you prefer to keep your shoes with you, bring a shoe bag to carry them while you explore this serene sanctuary.
Best Time To Visit
To make the most of your visit to the Simala Shrine, timing is key. The shrine is open daily from 6 AM to 6 PM, with a special Eucharistic celebration at noon. Saturdays have a different atmosphere, and on the 13th of each month, there’s a unique service at 10:30 AM. Plan your visit around these times to truly experience the spiritual essence of the sanctuary.
Simala Church Dress Code and Attire Etiquette
Before going to Simala Shrine…take a moment to consider your attire. Similar to other popular churches in the Philippines, give respects by following the dress code.
As of 2026, here’s the strict dress code. This isn’t your usual tourist spot; it’s a sacred space. Shorts and mini-skirts are not allowed. If your outfit doesn’t meet the modesty standards, there’s cloth available to cover up. Whether you’re a man or a woman, dress appropriately and cover up to show respect. My wife even bought a scarf to ensure she was properly covered.
Sleeveless tops, tube tops, or any clothing that shows too much skin are discouraged. Save your beachwear for another time and choose clothes that reflect the solemnity of the environment.
Two officers at the gate ensure everyone follows the dress code. Avoid tight clothes, shorts, mini-skirts, sleeveless tops, low-cut shirts, and slippers. Respect the church! I can’t guarantee they’ll give you a cover-up if you’re not dressed properly, but everyone inside seems to follow the rules. Plan your outfits before you visit!
No Drones Allowed!
For those hoping to capture aerial views with a drone, there’s a catch—drones are not allowed. The Simala Shrine is a place of peace, and the noise from a drone disrupts the tranquility. Drones are seen as disrespectful to the sacredness of the area, especially when used for commercial or personal gain.
Souvenirs Anyone?
After soaking in the spiritual atmosphere, take some time to explore the collection of religious artifacts. You can find rosaries, portraits of the Virgin Mary, patron statues, and prayer books—all meaningful keepsakes. Candles, available in various colors and priced as low as 35 pesos, can deepen your spiritual experience and help support the monastery’s upkeep.
